If you believe in hell ...

... you should at least care that people could end up there ...

It makes me wonder if believers who do hold that hell exists aren't often rather uncaring.  Selfish?

In addition to being rather uncaring and selfish, I am also a bit thick. Please explain.

Thanks for asking! I am typically vague in my pontifications.

Elaine's appeal at the end of the clip is valid. "I'm going to hell! Don't you care?!" Her boyfriend seems happy to enjoy her company (selfish), but his apparent belief in her downward destiny never moves him to engage the subject with her (uncaring).

I get the clip. I often hear very negative comments about Christians. Many people have a lot of animosity towards them. And yet, the things they say about Christians don't describe any of the ones I know.
Is this not also your experience?

Assuming you have experienced this, it surprises me that you would would turn around and do the same thing with an episode of Seinfeld. Implying, unfairly, that it accurately reflects a group of people.

In addition, discussing faith with anyone is a tricky matter these days as it can often be viewed as politically incorrect,

There is of course a difference between belief and understanding. I may believe in Hell but not be capable of understanding it, let it suffice to say it's not good. If I want what is good for my neighbor I will try to keep him from Hell. I also believe that the only way I can help him avoid Hell is to show him Jesus. This fits in well with everything else because the only way I can do anything worth doing is to show him Jesus. How do I do this? I don't-I just act like an idiot and pray that people would somehow see Jesus. My practice is weak but my theory is bulletproof.

J's M: No, my experience is different than yours. I do know many Christians (many would consider me one of them), and many are wonderful people, but others are very selfish with a veil of religious pretense (many would consider me one of these also), which I would argue is less tolerable than blatant selfishness.

Humor usually contains some element of truth exaggerated, yes? My implied question is "What truth is found here?" This may be a less than an accurate portrayal of some believer's actual attitudes, but it at least describes how those attitudes are sometimes perceived.

I added this post, like most of my posts, as "insider-criticism".

Greg, I typed up my best thoughtful response to your last comment but there was an error when I went to publish it.

I'm too lazy to try to remember what I said. i will have to leave it at that.

I will await your next post.
